[startx problem] - startx goes to black/grey screen and comes back to command prompt!

hi guys, I have a problem to boot to desktop, I type startx and it goes to that black/grey screen as its gonna start the gnome desktop, but comes back to commamnd prompt root.

anyone know how to fix something like this?

I have tried fix broken packages, system check and try to fix x server on the recovery method. But nothing seems to solve it.

what could be causing this problem?

Are there any error messages when you get back to the command prompt? Or in your /var/log/Xorg.0.log?

im running right now my backtrack4 r2 live cd, I checked on /var/log/Xorg.0.log and it doesnt show any error from what I can see.. is this file the one in my real installed linux version on the harddrive?

or is this file (the one Im looking at atm) just the one from the live cd?

these are the only errors I found on the xorg file: (however I dont know if this is only from the live version run or from my real linux instalation on my hd)

If you look at /var/log/Xorg.0.log, and not at /some-mount-point/var/log/Xorg.0.log then it is your in your live-system, not the installed one. You have to mount your installed system and look there for the file.

how do I mount it?

Kenny_Strawn 01-02-2011 09:41 PM

Yeah, I think it's some video card problem. Why doesn't X (and GDM) automatically load (seeing as though you're using Ubuntu)? If you're using Ubuntu Server you have to install the whole X server (and also a desktop environment for more user-friendliness), not just the xinit package.

Translation: If you typed the following command on the Server edition:

Code:

sudo apt-get install xinit
Then you also need to run:

Code:

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop

TobiSGD 01-02-2011 09:45 PM

You don't need to install a whole desktop environment to run X. I would even consider it contra productive on a server system.

To your mounting question:
Code:

sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt
Asuming that your Ubuntu's /-partition is sda1. Yo have to replace that with your actual device identifier. After that you can acces your installed system under the mount folder. I don't know about Backtrack, but you may also be able to mount the drive with your file-manager.

im using kubunto - backtrack 4 r2

and right now running from live cd version cause the one installed doesnt go to desktop when I type startx.

the xorg file I posted is from what I see on konqueror home/var/ .. so it might not be the one from the linux installed.

how can I mount my harddrive to see the files in it with the live cd version?

There seems to be nothing wrong with log-file, I am just wondering why backtrack tries to use the VESA-driver, instead of the radeon-driver. It may help to install the proprietary ATI-driver, but I can't give a guarantee for that.
If you want to try it, boot into your installed system, then type
Code:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install fglrx
aticonfig --initial

and reboot the system.

At the time Xorg 1.5.2 came out, his GPU didn't even exist :-)

Are you sure that you are using an up to date version of your OS? adamk75 is right, your xserver is way out of date, it should be much newer, if you are really using an up to date Kubuntu.

and about this error I tried many things without success also as I couldnt connect to the internet I was very limited on ways to fix it, so I gave up..
