[Dapper] Ugly fonts with freetype 2.1.10 (resolved)

libfreetype6 2.1.10-1 entered dapper a few days ago. After upgrading to it from 2.1.7-2.4ubuntu1, some fonts on my 19" CRT @ 1600x1200 look too small and "squished together." I've tried playing with the DPI and other font rendering settings, but I just can't get nice looking fonts with freetype 2.1.10.

I've included screenshots of the font differences below. Note that the only change is the version of freetype -- everything else is the same. The font for the tabs, menu bar, and URL bar is DejaVu Sans 5 (too small with 2.1.10, and 6 too large).

Freetype 2.1.7-2.4ubuntu1

Freetype 2.1.10-1

I haven't seen any similar complaints about freetype 2.1.10 anywhere. Does anyone else experience the same problem?

That's not the problem; anti-aliasing is enabled and working with both versions of freetype, as the screenshots clearly demonstrate.

So report it as a bug to the Ubuntu devs.

I was very happy with the Kubuntu Dapper Flight 6 AMD 64 vers , at first. Then,I reset the screen resolution to a manageable size in system hardware and set my Monitor drivers from from the plugnplay default to my Mitusubishi Diamond plus 73specific drivers from the configure list. After downloading the auto upgrades with Adept, upon reboot the next day the screen fonts in every program became practically unreadable. I know if you complain to a Doctor "it hurts when I do this", he'll reply "don't do that" , but in this case my fav browser, Firefox is easier to install with the Adept download/install utlity than doing the terminal thing.Any suggestions about solving this strange Fonts change problem? Using the default screen resolution works, but it's a real pain at 640x480.

Alright, I recently switched back to Debian, and the fonts look much better with freetype version 2.2.1. Hopefully the new version will appear in dapper as well before it's released.

I am not sure if this will help, but a recent dapper dev post talks about font rendering: http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=180647

Install the MS fonts if that is what you are use to. The automatix script will do so in a simple manner.
