Question [ASK] User Mode Linux newbie here... :)

Hi ,
I've just installed user mode linux from ubuntu repo (sudo apt-get install user-mode-linux uml-utilities bridge-utils debootstrap) , and i've been trying to run several Debian filesystems. What i want to ask is , do I have to download both kernel and the debian filesystems to run the virtual debian OS ? is it possible to run the debian filesystems without using its kernel ?

THank yu
