Installation problems with Mandriva 10.1 HELP!

I just bought a Mandriva 10.1 DVD because i have dial up

, and i was trying to install it, and it brought up DR-DOS, and detected all of my hardware, and then it asked me about DOS Protected Mode Services and it gave me memory options and it prompts me for my choice, and my choice is /MLX but i cant figure out how to choose it. I tried INSTALL/MLX and setup/mlx etc. but nothing works. This may sound stupid but this is my first time installing linux. Thank You

It may be you have a live distribution...
or
What does the dvd label say exactly?
Is this a dvd or a CD (sorry to ask)
Where did you buy it?

I suppose your bios option allow you to start from the dvd reader

Looks like to me the iso image was burnt incorrectly,
instead of beeing burnt as is, it was burnt with the option
of making the cd bootable (but dos bootable, not linux)

By the way I suppose if it is 10.1 you should say mandrake (am joking)

i think the disc is bad, because no GUI comes up for the install, and the ppl at the place i got it told m ethat if i have any questions, to talk to them

Bad disc?
That was exactly the sense of my comments.
Probably uncorrectly burnt dvd

Let us know what happens when you get a new dvd
or get this sorted

(or if you have broadband you can download an image,
or you could try a dvd bought somewhere else)

I have been looking for a topic about this EVERYWHERE on the internet. I asked everyone and nobody knew. I burnt it with nero as a Bootable Data Disc. I guess all i have to do is burn as just a data disc. THANK YOU!!!!!!

You need to burn it as a image or iso, whichever option ur given.

actually, now that i think about it
Nero just gave me my option page. It said that i can burn a UDF/ISO disc which it describes as readable on Windows systems. Then i could also burn a "Data Disc" should i choose one of these?
I could also just click "Send to E:" which is my burner and then just burn the ISOs from the windows option. This does not give format options which actually might be good so it will burn it As-Is.
Any insight?

Thanks. I'm burning it as the UDF/ISO Bridge Disc option. I'm going to test the first disc to see if it brings up the installation menu before i burn the second two.

Just to explain more, if you burn it as a data CD you have a CD with one file on it, the iso (useless). An iso is an image containing all the files that should be in all the various places on the CD. Burning it as an image extracts (in a way) those files to the CD.

Okay. New problem. I burnt it as the ISO disc. When i restarted it did not detect and load. I checked my bios, and indeed, the drive was set as 1st. I think that is quite odd. Any reason that now, as an iso disc, the computer isn't detecting it to boot from?

The DVD should boot. Have you tried any other bootable CD you might have, just
to double check.
Unless you still have an uncorrectly burnt CD... or is it a dvd?

You can purchase from a few website for a few $ mandriva cds or dvd
That will save you lots of trouble at this stage.

I got it to work a few days ago. But now my problem is dual booting with my windows. I have decided to just put it on my other laptop

Hope your dual boot goes well. There are plenty of emails in LQ
on the subject. Be warned that backups are worthwile.
If you use win2000 or XP you want to be sure to leave the MBR
untouched bec zindozs expect to be the first to boot the win bootloader (ntloader?) that boolooader congfig filewill then (once edited) offer you the opportunity to boot the linux OS
