LXer: Why Microsoft Should Acquire Linux

Published at LXer:

Alright, I’m going to say this. I think Microsoft should acquire Linux. Now, I understand that Linux is not as independent of an OS as Windows; it’s a movement towards the open environment for applications; therefore, the standard M&A process won’t work.

Weird point of view. Why would MS just want a kernel? The rest of it is under the control of the FSF, the OSDL and disparate other organisations.

And don't let's forget the whole "Embrace and Extend" philosophy of Microsoft.....

Totally silly idea and it wouldn't work. I can't say I would care if MS bought out Mandriva and Ubuntu. They already own Suse to some degree. The directions of Mandriva, Ubuntu, and Suse are already committed to parallel business courses with MS.

My feelings about Redhat are still fairly positive. I suppose they could sell out to Redmond, but I think it's pretty unlikely at this point. Debian would simply lead all the other distros with a forked kernel, and nothing will have changed apart from sending the distros with the most non-free inclinations to MS where they probably belong anyway.

Hmmm. Maybe it's not such a bad idea. Free Linux and let the Windows wannabe distros go someplace else.
