LXer: Ubuntu more secure than Leopard, Windows Vista?

Published at LXer:

Ubuntu Linux was the only system left unscathed in a multi-platform hacking competition last week, but does that mean it is more secure? Apple's Leopard OS lasted 30 second, Windows Vista Ultimate lasted until the third day, but Ubuntu's Linux distribution alone was left secure at the end of the "Pwn to Own contest" at CanSecWest security conference held in Vancouver. James Turner, a security analyst from IBRS said that "in this particular instance, which supports the conclusion that Ubuntu is more secure".

Lots of spin in that story. The comment at the end, that no one found a flaw in the source code therefore opening the code is bad seems, at best, idiotic.

From what I read, there where quite a few people banging on it. I think that the winner targeted the Apple Air because that is the computer he wanted to take home. After the Mac and Vista machines where successfully attacked that left the Ubuntu machine as the only one left where you could take home a computer and a lot of cash.

It seems to me that the outcome had more to do with how timely vulnerabilities are identified and patched. Apple Computer didn't do very well in this regard. Ubuntu and Microsoft did.
