LXer: The Apple way and the Linux way

Published at LXer:

Today I tried to help a Mac user save some pictures to a DVD. There were more than 1GB of photos, so it made more sense to use a DVD than two CDs. Unfortunately, Mac OS X thinks that you need to make movies when you insert a blank DVD disc -- it has no idea that you want to save data to it. What you, the user, want to do does not matter. There's actually a setting in the System Preferences pane under "CD/DVD" that gives you the option to choose what the computer will do when a blank disc is inserted. There are a couple of options: open iDVD, open in Finder, do nothing, etc. It's a prety easy fix.

It is frustrating however how the commercial OSes sort of push you into a particular action or prevent the option of actions all together. But I think that Windows and the Mac are pretty much on par with each other in this respect. The only thing that Apple does more frustratingly more than MS is that you can't put the Mac OS on a non-Apple computer.
