LXer: Richard Stallman's FSF Suing Cisco for GPL Violations - Cisco dissapointed

Published at LXer:

Cisco said it was disappointed by the lawsuit, saying it takes its open source software obligations and responsibilities seriously. "We are currently reviewing the issues raised in the suit but believe we are substantially in compliance. We have always worked very closely with the FSF and hope to reach a resolution agreeable to the company and the foundation." Cisco is one of the leading contributors to the Linux kernel. Um, Cisco, "substantially in compliance" and "actually in compliance" can be two very, very, very different things. Besides, the FSF has been trying to work with Cisco to get to actual compliance for YEARS and Cisco isn't moving.

Look at it this way, Gov. Balgojevich was "substantially in compliance" with Illinois and US anti-corruption laws. Really, he didn't break all that many!

Very interesting. Cisco would rather contribute a few hundred thousand dollars to Linux projects than encourage people to look at their own drivers. I wonder what they think people would do if they studied Cisco hardware drivers. This "Linux" stuff must have a LOT of perceived value.
