LXer: Quanta to ship $100 notebooks by year end. 2005

Published at LXer:

According to the Economic News, a quantity of Linux based notebooks made by Quanta will be shipped before the end of 2005 and distributed to Nigeria, Argentina, China, Brazil and India. [ED- We really need to pay more attention to this. Negroponte was on the Charlie Rose show Thursday, and the numbers that they are shooting for is much larger than the press has mentioned. They are talking about 100-200M units following the initial 7MU first deployment. Current WW notebook sales is 46MU so Linux will be #1 if this works out PS. MS offered to make a windows version as did Apple, both turend down for not being open source. They expect a huge indigenous developement effort-bstadil]

I did hear obout those $100 laptops just didn't think they will be available so soon, which by all means is a great thing for them developing countries. Any idea what the specs of those notebooks are (not that it matters at $100) and what flavour of linux they're running.

buwaleed: Take a look at this article.

Quote:

Based on RedHat Linux, the laptops feature a 500 MHz AMD processor, a SVGA 8" display capable of displaying both full color and high-contrast black and white, 128MB of RAM and 512MB of flash memory, four USB ports, wireless broadband and will be able to operate on wind-up power. One minute of cranking gives enough power for 10 minutes of operation. The AC Cord doubles as carrying strap.
Cheers,

I like the wind-up = power idea: simple, yet effective (and perfect for third world countries). Actually I wouldn't mind one myself either... ;)

>>"I like the wind-up = power idea: simple, yet effective (and perfect for third world countries) ..."

probably those people will eventually come out an idea providing a "on the road-side with a bench but under a coconut tree" paid service of cranking with the help of a "refurbished" air-compressor through a shaft at the side of that laptop with that crank handle pulled off ... but off-cause somehow they managed to find electrical supply to run their compressor ... in a sense this project also helps in further propelling their un-official economy sector ...

btw :: if i happened to be in one of those countries again , probably i will smuggle a few units out or what ...
