Online research communities aim to unite scientists worldwide to find cures for neglected diseases Scientists from Sydney to San Francisco have created an online research collaboration to develop cures for tropical diseases, using the "open source" programming model that produced freeware like Linux and Firefox, the award-winning Web browser.
A very nice idea, but I seriously doubt it is going to really get going. Too many scientific jobs and perks are based on a scientists publication record, and most journals I've dealt with would consider this to be prior publication. It is also going to need a HUGE amount of funding for clinical trials. There is just no getting around that those take years and cost hundreds of millions of dollars.
