What to do: Don't worry about software patents, they rarely hold up in court. They also only exist in the US.

I personally try to avoid proprietary software as much as possible, not only for theoretical reasons, but because usually it's of much lesser quality and much buggier and prone to crashing. And because I use 64-bit.
