LXer: Microsoft to Mobile Customers: Choice is a Bad Thing (and Linux will Lose)

Published at LXer:

Last week, David Coursey reported that Microsoft entertainment and devices boss Robbie Bach made the prediction in an analyst briefing that Linux on mobile will lose. Why? It’s choice is a bad thing for customers and that there is too much Linux in the mobile marketplace. By Bach’s count there are 17 variants of Linux available on mobile phones. He sees this as a bad thing for customers. We, unsurprisingly, see this as a bad thing for Microsoft.

Don't suppose he realizes that windows is actually on fewer mobile devices than linux or symbian?

The most common tv commercials I see these days revolve around Droid and the iPhone, neither of which runs windows.

Microsoft needs to wake up and smell the coffee, linux is the future, the days of windows on every device are long in the past.

No kidding. Windows mobile is a complete joke compared to Android or the iPhone. I just got an Android phone, and it is a million times more innovative than any Windows Mobile phone that I've ever seen. And Android is just getting going. How many years head start did Microsoft have before they got owned by Jobs and the iPhone?

The bottom line is that Microsoft was never an innovative company. The only way they could compete with innovative companies was to buy them (and then usually throttle the innovation). Since they can't buy Linux, they are SOL.
