LXer: Installing iPodLinux on the iPod Nano

Published at LXer:

I recently received an iPod Nano as a gift. My Nano is amazingly small, contains a gigabyte of storage, and sounds very good through its ear buds. It didn't take long for me to learn that folks have been putting Linux on iPods for a couple of years now, courtesy of the iPodLinux Project. Granted, the software for the Nano and most fourth- and fifth-generation versions of the iPod is experimental -- we're talking the bleeding edge -- but, well, you know me -- Linux on my desktop, workstation, laptop, Tivo, and router. I had to have it on the Nano, too. Here's my report how I converted my stock iPod Nano into a dual-booting, sweet MP3-singing, iDoom-playing monster.

I have few question: After you do that can you still use the nano with devices built for it? I have a bose dockstation that I dont want to waste if I install ipodlinux on my nano. I want to see how good the video looks on it too because I want video but I dont want to buy the ipod video. Would the reborn ipod work well w/ itunes under linux? I want to use itunes w/ it from a windows machine because it is neat and create all those automatic playlists for me. So:

1) can you still use devices built for the nano?
2) can you still interface with itunes to download customized playlists?
3) how good is the video?

Thanks very much for this well organized guide to ipolinux on the nano. I am willing to try it.
