Those up top (the Presidential Inaugural Committee) chose to utilize Microsoft's Silverlight technology to stream the upcoming inaugural events for the new president of the United States. Though Microsoft certainly likes this idea, this leaves out thousands of people in the US and elsewhere who still cannot run Silverlight or an open source alternative on their systems from viewing the streamed video online.

Too bad the inauguration used Silverlight 2.0 where as Moonlight only supports Silverlight 1.0. So much for the talk about supporting OSS.

Really, I didn't know. They said they released moonlight so that you could watch the inauguration ... it would be ironic if they released it supporting only 1.0 and the video needed 2.0.

You didn't need moonlight/silverlight at all. Plenty of sites streamed it live and didn't require it.
