I thought Neal Stephenson had already covered this and Linux is a free tank?

Yuck, Linux is definitely not that. Maybe Ubuntu is, I mean that's what most people think "Linux" is.

What about LFS, it would be a kit car that you build yourself.

Well, it was a bit more complicated than "a tank" because it could be whatever you wanted it to be (if I recall correctly) like a helicopter or a boat. Also, you could take it to independent mechanics or fix it yourself or even build your own parts.
