LXer: If a kernel update makes a user's screen goes blurry in the forest and there's no developer th

Published at LXer:

Now that thing are somewhat stable in the "hates kernel mode setting" world of Intel i810 video in Linux (sort of), and I've moved on from 2002-era hardware to 2010-era hardware in the form of a laptop with ATI Mobility Radeon 4200 HD video, my problems with the evil evilness that is kernel mode setting should be over, right? Not so much.

Well I certainly hope the author's bug reports are more detailed than his rant. He doesn't actually explain what the problem is (other than some snarky/sly reference to blurriness), and then says things like:

Quote:
And no, with the open ati driver, passing nomodeset or radeon.modeset=0 at the boot line is NOT working
Well what, might I ask, isn't working? Exactly what happens and doesn't happen when those options are passed? What did the author expect to happen?

As for:

Quote:
Does the pain come from the kernel, Xorg, the video driver, or somewhere else?
The video drivers are split into three areas: Xorg, the kernel, and mesa. If we knew what the problem was, we might be able to tell the author where the problem originates.

And, frankly, being a non-developer isn't what makes complaints go to /dev/null. I'm not a developer, but this rant is so useless, the only place it should go is /dev/null. Give us details. Give the developers details. Do it without an attitude. Just bitching about the technology these developers are trying so hard to work in isn't going to win the author any fans (so saying things like 'So I upgrade my hardware and am almost immediately right back in KMS hell?' is counter-productive).
