I want a drop-in replacement for WMC (Windows Media Center) 2003. I want something that will not only let me watch DVD or video files on my computer, I want a program that will also serve as a digital video recorder (DVR), ala TiVo, and enable me to watch videos, no matter what their native format, from my network's hard drives

I kind of like the fact that there isn't any single do-it-all program out there. I like my combination of TVTime, mplayer/mencoder, dvd::rip and grip, freevo and mythtv, etc. These programs (for the most part) do one thing and do it exceedingly well. It seems like trying to combine these tools into one would ultimately limit the functionality of any single part.

Although I do agree with the author on the choice of a tv card. I've been very happy with my HD-3000 card.
