it depends on just HOW OLD it is !
i have a 16 year old dell P4 cpu and a gforce2 mx400 card ( uses the 96 driver) and 1 gig ram

CentOS 5 or ScientificLinux 5 runs fine out of the box

but i have SL6 installed and have to DOWNGRADE X11 for the nvidia 96 driver

for old hardware i do like rhel/centos/SL
