The Thunderbird devs need to spend more time on cleaning up the code and fixing broken core function instead of adding more and more features. I've downloaded it every time a new version comes out and I can never stand to use it for more than a few days. It was only recently there was any way to use more than one SMTP server. Account management is still very buggy, new accounts don't always show up when added, old data is left in the config files, various dialogs are broken, the list goes on and on and on without end. The quality is very poor.
Everyone agrees that in UNIX-land a program should be good at one thing and not try to do everything. Thunderbird is an exception and it hasn't worked. The project lacks focus. Do they want to be Outlook for Linux? Or do they want to be a great email client?
