LXer: Fglrx Finally Works With Ubuntu 10.10 (Xorg 1.9, Kernel 2.6.35/36) [ATI]

Published at LXer:

Fglrx was updated yesterday in Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat and what's special about this is that it finally supports Xorg 1.9 and 2.6.35 kernel. Up until now, ATI users who've tried to install Fglrx or upgraded from Ubuntu 10.04 would get a blank screen.

There's always xserver-xorg-video-ati, isn't there? Why not just use it instead of the proprietary fglrx driver?

Because some people want fast 3D acceleration, not just so-so 3D acceleration.

3D performance? Using AMD Stream and OpenCL runtimes?
The stock ATI driver for xorg is fine for home users but the proprietary driver still has a lot of useful/necessary features for a lot of people.

Yes, but the xserver-xorg-video-ati driver (when I last checked) supports cards up to HD 4000 series (when combined with radeonhd driver) and also allows from some advanced 3D acceleration (and, last I checked, is really simply code from fglrx that has been put under an FOSS license once it has been in fglrx for some time).

You are incorrect on a couple of points. xserver-xorg-video-ati supports cards up to the HD5xxx series. 3D acceleration is supported by the libgl1-mesa-dri package on all cards up to the HD4xxx series (and newer Mesa and 'radeon' now supports HD5xxx cards as well). 'radeonhd' has nothing to do with any of this. It's a separate 2D only driver that is no longer developed or maintained.

And, no, the open source DRI driver is not code from fglrx. It was written, from scratch, using documentation provided by AMD.

But this discussion is moot. You asked why someone would want to use 'fglrx' and you were given completely reasonable answers. To summarize: the open source driver just isn't as good as fglrx at many things.
