LXer: EU could force Microsoft to bundle Firefox with Windows

Published at LXer:

The European Commission could force Microsoft to bundle Firefox with future versions of Windows. The revelation came as part of Microsoft's quarterly filing with the Security and Exchange Commission. Among the statements is a clause outlining the penalties being considered by the European watchdog, which recently ruled that Microsoft is harming competition by bundling Internet Explorer with Windows. The most interesting situation outlined in the filing would see either Microsoft or computer manufacturers forced to install Firefox, Chrome, Opera and Safari by default alongside Internet Explorer on new Windows-based PCs.

Hahah, that is so funny. "The European Commission". I started laughing right there. All the European commission does is to complain. That is in fact what most of the Europe does these days. I can see how it is soooo wrong for Microsoft to ship their browser with their operating system(?). But forcing Microsoft or other computer manufactures to install other browsers is the way to go(?).

I would also like the "European Commission" to start forcing everybody to use my horrible media player written in Java, because I feel like Windows Media Player is killing my crappy player. If WMP was not shipped with Windows, probably a lot more people would be using my Java Player(?).

Also, I would like, if possible that more software developed in Europe (great European software, like: ???) would be bundled with Windows or installed by default. I recently bought a HP computer and man, there is just not enough software bundled with it(?). I could certainly use Chrome, Opera and Safari.

The European Commission, soooo funny

Your rant very is amusing.
I happen to agree that forcing MS to ship Firefox with Windows is a shitty idea, but the EU commission has done more to foster competition and open MS de facto standards to third-party implementers than the DoJ ever did. The DoJ just chickened out and left all those not part of The Empire high and dry.

BTW, were you living under a rock when MS was forced (by the EU Commission) to release details about its file-sharing protocols, that it so stubbornly refused to share as a means of locking its clients into its crapware? Don't you think that as a Linux user you yourself have benefited from the extra documentation that the Samba devs now have access to?

And about "great" European software: WTF! You are using (according to your profile) a number of FLOSS distros, developed by people all over the globe, including Europe.
Oh and lest you forget the Linux kernel started in Finland.
