And why is it that a computer with a free operating system will be priced equal to or more than the same computer with a non-zero price operating system?

This article makes it sound like Dell is intentionally trying to make linux look bad to the general public. Does this mean that Dell has made some deal with M$ to help suppress linux interest?

Because MS gives Dell a BIG discount for pre-installing Windows and all the spamware/junkware vendors PAY Dell for the privilege of loading their manure onto the computer you just bought. That revenue stream essentially subsidizes the computers Dell sells. Since there is none of that crapola on Linux, there is no subsidy for the Linux machines and they appear to cost more.

If that's the case then Linux will never be cheaper than M$, because no linux machine will ever come with preloaded spamware/junkware.

I doubt that we can be sure about that. Any vendor--large or small--can make deals with SW (or other) vendors to pre-load just about anything. If I am not mistaken, the various Linux and OpenSource licenses would not prevent that.

Remember Lindows? The package management system was a commercial pay system. The entire business model was based on the idea of making money off of software purchases.
