The first thing I want to note is: The merge is NOT ON, it looks incredibly likely, and it's looked incredibly likely for a few weeks now, but there are still some very important things to work out, and a lot of discussion still needs to happen. It'll be interesting to see what happens if/when the projects merge.

As long as they keep a DE independent settings manager (i.e. beryl-manager... compiz doesn't have an equivalent in its main release.) I'll be happy. I'm sure.
