LXer: BleachBit - Cleans unnecessary files to free disk space and maintain privacy

Published at LXer:

BleachBit deletes unnecessary files to free valuable disk space, maintain privacy, and remove junk. Rid your system of old clutter including cache, temporary files, cookies, and broken shortcuts. Designed for Linux systems, it wipes clean Bash, Beagle, Epiphany, Firefox, Flash, Java, KDE, OpenOffice.org, Opera, RealPlayer, rpmbuild, VIM, XChat, and more.

While it maybe true about cleaning cache and tmp files from browsers and apt ect... the wipe feature is flawed and I would not rely on this to securely delete files or wipe free disk space. That said I have not tested how thoroughly it cleans tmp files and things like java and firefox ,chrome, chats and the rest so I would exersise caution there as well. The obvious locations may be deleted but there might be more obscure ways to find data from these programs. Given it's fail as a secure wipe tool I would be wary.
Here is a thread I started about bleachbit. I thought you may be interested in seeing if you can also validate what me and another poster found. This much is for sure, bleachbit does not wipe all unallocated space and some files are recoverable at least with the foremost utility. "apt-get install foremost". I would install sluethkit as well from source so you can pipe unallocated space to foremost for testing with blkls. All the commands, tests and results are in this thread
