I find octave and gnu plot do everything any desktop calculator does and more, takes a bit to learn but the additional functions I don't think I could live without (Mainly the ability to have named variables and being able to use matrices) now I have them.

If I have to use a box with octave not installed python can work as a powerful calculator with the ability to used named variables.

I usually use galculator, sometimes python for more advanced formulas, or sometime I just got out my TI-83 ... it still works after all these years.
