LXer: 'I'm no visionary': Torvalds up for $1.3m life-changing gong

Published at LXer:

Open-source poster child Linus Torvalds, who kickstarted development of the Linux operating system kernel, has been nominated for the 1m Millennium Technology Prize - but says he's "no visionary" and is surprised Linux has been so successful. Torvalds and stem cell engineer Dr Shinya Yamanaka are finalists for the gong - one of the world's top awards for science and handed out once every two years by the Technology Academy of Finland. The award, worth 817k ($1.3m), recognises technology innovations that improve the quality of human life.

Visionaries seldom think of themselves as such.

Persons who advertise themselves as "visonaries" seldom are.

The same goes for creative persons.

So let me get this straight, Linus is running against a guy who is a Stem Cell researcher. Sorry, but as good as Linus is I cannot see how an Kernel can compete with Stem Cell Technology. Let's be realistic, how has Linux changed the quality of life of people with severe health issues that can be eased, if not fixed, with Stem Cell Technology? This to me is a no brainer, give the award to Dr Shinya Yamanaka.

err, the code to do stem cell research maybe? Among other research projects. Who knows. Maybe they used Windows.
