SUSE 10.1 installation problem CD 1

Hi,

I am completely new to Linux and now bought SUSE 10.1. After inserting the first CD (of five) things go well. But at some point the installation procedure just got hanged (approx when there is just 10 minutes left to insert the second CD).
When buying my PC I wanted to have my 40 GB cut into two equal peices so I reckon 20GB is enough for each (XP and Linux). My partition looks like this:
C: 15.22 GB (healthy; system)
502 MB (healthy; unknown partition)
8.66 GB (healthy; unknown partition)
12.89 GB (healthy; unknown partition)
I wonder why the other partitions have no letters.

Please let me know what I did wrong in the pre-instatllation procedure and what I can do to make it work. I really want to get rid of XP.

If you are using Windows fdisk utility to look at your partitions, no drive letter will be seen because Windows does not recognize the reiserfs which Suse uses. Suse usually uses three partitions (partitioned for you during the install process). One partition for your /home, one for /root, and one for a swap partition. This part is apprarently completed in the install process.

If the install is hanging, more information is needed. Are there any error messages?

Bob, thanks for coming back so quikly. I have no error messages. Only that the counting down of the time to insert CD 2 in the left bottom of the screen gets stuck like "8.47min left". Then the mouse also stops working. I have to restart my pc since the keyboard also stops working. do I have to do something in the previous steps?

This sounds like a hardware issue. What are your hardware specs?

hardware specs:
AMD 1800+ XP with 256 internal ram

Meanwhile I have tried installing it again and I checked the details tab. the installation got hanged here:
"Kernel default - 2.6.16.13-4.i586 rpm (44.97mb) -- the standard kernel"

I installed SUSE on my 40 gb drive before just two days before and two years earlier a friend of mine installed Slackware and it worked. but now i want to use the SUSE on one part of my harddisk but do not know what is going wrong.

I got the same problem. Installation freezes. I reboot the machine and start update Suse installation it moves proper but freeze at the last step again. Hey n_ganpat Tell me if you have any solution about this situation. thnk You

I'm not real good with linux however it sounds like your problem is happening with a hardware copmatability issue. That package is basicly the linux library of hardware drivers. If it freezes while loading you've probably got a pci card in there that's conflicting. Try removing one pci card at a time and loading and see if you can load once you remove a certain card.

I wish to remove this ^+%& card, however it is almost impossible if you are using a laptop.

I'm now trying SuSe Linux 10.1 because it's got newer components and I noticed the same problem. It is opensuse. It seems to happen on two of my computers. They both have totally different pci cards and I don't think any of them are the same as in the other computer. Especially because some don't fit in one, but do in the other. SuSe Linux 9.0 works on both machines. What versions might work instead (What's the newest version that does work?).
