I have been trying to upgrade to suse 11.1 useing the latest kde 4 supplied with it but every time i try to use kde 4 my monitor just flashes between text and a black screen.
this also happen's trying to use kde 4 from suse 11.
I'm sure kde 4 must be trying to do something smart with my monitor but i have not been able to work out how to turn it off.
Please provide your monitor specs so that people can help you better. What monitor are you using? Try to log in with the console first, and run xconf or xconfig and then take a look at your xorg.conf file in the /etc/X11 directory and ensure that it has the right monitor settings. Then startx or logout and log back in to kde4.
Again, please post your monitor specs! We can not help you unless you do so! You can get your specs from the manufacturer's manual that came with the monitor when you purchased it. Post your supported resolutions, your Horizonal and Vertical Sync rates. Also post your xorg.conf file that is in the /etc/X11 directory or similar directory. As an alternative, you can read the directions for "xorgconfig" and solve the problem yourself!
Just built this new pc and figured I tried suse. I'm having a similar problem.
My hardware:
1. MB: Asus KFSN5-D
-->integrated video: XGI Z9s
2: CPU: AMD 2352
3: RAM: 8GB kINGSTON
4: MONITOR: ACER x193w
5: OPENSUSE 11.1
6: KDE
I don't see XGI in opensuse hardware list, but it is detected along with the monitor with resolution details. I tried different refresh rate, resolution, 16bit, 24bit. Nothing. When I change resolution and hit test, the issue doesn't happen but comes back after committing the change.
I'm not sure how to get the x-config output yet. Getting use to this.
Distribution: Mandriva 2009 X86_64 suse 11.1 X86_64 Centos X86_64 Debian X86_64 Linux MInt 86_64 OS X

Do not know how you try to chance it .
Maybe the next will help .
Login the failsafe mode as a user start as root yast>hardware>Graphic card and monitor
Than yast will probe you're graphic card and monitor again.
If if comes with with a good solution save it
And than startx
