I am trying to run thru the tutorials in linux Format Magazine 88/89/90 for PHP/MYSQL I have installed apache2 php5 and MYSQL.
I installed phpmyadmin andf copied phpmyadmin directory into \var\www. (as LFF 88 said that that was the "Usual place for localhost" I then made a sub-dir of config in the phpmyadmin folder and performed chmod 777 config making it open to the world.
I started apache2 (apache2ctl start)

and then tried from Konq the url http://localhost/phpmyadmin

I got this error:

Object not found!
The requested URL was not found on this server. If you entered the URL manually please check your spelling and try again.
If you think this is a server error, please contact the webmaster.

I pinged 127.0.0.1 - got preplies back ok

I MUST assume that in SuSE 10.2 the local host path is not \var\www OR that the magazine was in error OR EVEN I have done something wrong .
I just want to get phpmyadmin running - any help at this point WOULD be very welcome

You don't ping 127.0.0.1, you Also could be that your apache/phpadmin isn't listening on localhost(127.0.0.1), or could be using another port.

localhost resolves to the IP address 127.0.0.1 which is the ethernet local loopback interface. So pinging localhost or 127.0.01 is the same thing. If the /etc/hosts file does not contain a line like 127.0.0.1 localhost the command "ping localhost " will fail. localhost allows one to run TCP/IP client / server applications like apache on the same computer with out needing an internet connection.

linux is case sensitive. The correct URL should be http://localhost/phpMyAdmin. If you just try http://localhost you should see the default home page i,e, index.html unless you have changed anything. The default location known as DocumentRoot in apache's configuration file is where apache looks for its web pages can vary between distributions. /var/www may not be correct its been awhile since I have played with SuSE but if I remember it could be /srv/www/htdocs.

I still had a devil of a job trying to get it all to work as in Linux Format Mag 88 page 88. Rather than keep asking, I had a good scout round for documentation. I may be a newbie in Linux but I have been in computers for 30 years so I never read manuals. :-) So I followed my own advice to others "RTFM"

by Kevin Millicam who has created an excellent procedure. He has even put in screenshots to help.

I had created a special group to enable access to the applications, like Kevin, BUT I had left out some essential members from the group.Anyway I followed Kevin's procedure and it got me where I wanted to go.
