Some of the articles that you mention were written well before the two sites you mentioned existed. I don't see having old articles as a problem. The same thing will happen to the sites you mentioned with time. Some of the articles will either get irrelevant or they will have to be modified as time goes on due to new releases. Also authors write articles at their free will, so I don't think anyone should be obliged to link anywhere unless they want to. If you look at the stickies you will note that quite a lot of them have high view counts which in my opinion shows that there are people out there who are finding them useful even if similar articles exist elsewhere.

Do these instructions work on Suse 10.1? I'm using 10.1 by the way, I'm new to installing applications on Linux systems. I'm was trying to install Kaffeine from source, a new version which i needed badly with codecs but I cannot be successful. I'm avoiding RPM packs because I really want to learn installing apps from source.
After several days of tying, I switched to Xine Player and installed it from source. It was quite hard from the start, but well I successfully installed Xine and it's up and running, I can play almost different kinds of video formats.

For openSUSE 10.1, take a look here. Note that the instructions used the SMART package manager instead of YAST because the package management tools in openSUSE 10.1 didn't work very well.

you know i was hoping for something i can use offline since i have no internet here.
how is it that over 2GB of storage do not contain all the codecs required to play these ultimedia files?

i am getting so frustrated trying to download win32 only to find "dependancies missing"

download them manually from somewhere & put all them in a folder & do "rpm -Uvh *.rpm" as root & watch the magic happen :-)

It will complain about some missing dependency but you will find them on the DVD ;-)

Yes, it works the same in 11.0 as it does in the older versions.

The article is still relevant, but its now a lot easier to add the required repositories. Simply run YaST -> Software -> Community Repositories and choose the options to add the Packman and Videolan repositories. Once those repositories are setup you can then install the required xine packages, libdvdcc and any other software you may need.
