hey great info i have noe got mp3 and videos running on my pavillion notebook and my desk top and am moving on to moretime consuming/ less productive efforts.... thanks for the help it is very possible i will continue to be an idiot so dont be suprised if i keep on posting...

i believe that this works as well as implied at least i recall watching spongebob while my machine was running in suse with the advice given here

Thx i have installed it but now i receive the following message.. This version of Xine (uded by Kaffeine) has only a reduced set of supported codecs. It is not able to play DVDs.

have you installed smart package installer ? getting the updated versions of xine are pretty easy with that application... seems that you would be able to find the new drivers with the channelws supplied by smart

I give up on Xine. I need to find the xmms plugin for playing mpegs as well as the codecs that go with it. I googled but can't find a working download site. Anyone know where it is? I used those rpm packages to play mpegs and mp3's on my Redhat 9 box. I don't feel like listening to Suse's Rpm manager b*tch about python dependencies, so I just want some simple rpms that actually work. I know how to do an rpm -ivh, -Uvh, -q, -qa, -e, etc. from the commandline.

Tried to run Smart Package Manager after install, and it says:

"Configuration is in readonly mode."

Alaois please read my initial post in full because you are asking things that are already covered in the first post. As you know Suses version of Xine is crippled so obviously it doesn't play dvds, mp3s etc. In my first post I mentioned that you need to uninstall xine-lib (Suses xine) and install libxine (Packmans xine) in order to have a full working xine package and win32-codecs automatically installed. Cheers.

SMART comes preconfigured with most Suse repos so its a lot easier to install SMART than mess around configuring YAST repos. If you don't want to use SMART, then take a look at the Suse repos sticky thread and add the third party repos to YAST manually. Cheers.

What I find strange is that Xine now works after I fiddled around with those seven special rpms that involve codecs, and I didn't do the smart installer crap. I had to force the libxine into the system and the libquicktime-devel will not work, but other than that, Xine plays mpegs. But Totem doesn't. And I thought totem was just a front for xine.

I following the sticky entitled “How to enable full multimedia capabilities on Suse 10.1 using the Xine engine”, but I’m having issues installing Smart.

I have successfully installed rpm-python-4.4.2.40, but when I try and install smart-0.41-28.guru.suse101.i686.rpm, I get several warnings and the following error:

unpacking of archive failed on file /usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages/smart/hook.pyc;4512a046: cpio: read failed – Bad file descriptor

I tried to install the addons package just to see what happens, and then I get this error:

Smart-addons-0.41-28.guru.suse101.1686.rpm: not an rpm package (or package manifest):

Your packages could be corrupt, try downloading them again or try using a different mirror.

Hey didn't you guys notice that PackMan page has changed? The instructions on HOWTO for libdvdcss are not there anymore...

Can someone please post them here?
