Hi,

I am trying to enable the 3d effects on OpenSUSE 11.2, but
I see the following message on the desktop effects' general tab:

Compositing is not supported on your system.
Required X extensions (XComposite and XDamage) are not available.

I am using KDE desktop and I heard that I can use the default
kwin instead of compiz for the 3d effects.

Has someone made 3d effects working on KDE?

If the composite extension isn't enabled, desktop effects won't work from either compiz or KDE. You should attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file to a post here.

I have a nvidia card. I didn't even need to generate a xorg.conf and compositing works. I guess the OP could try generating a xorg.conf and see if that helps.
Tell us the o/p of:

as root.

Posting the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file is the way to go. It will tell us the model of the card, what options are enabled in xorg.conf, and why composite isn't getting enabled.

That depends on the distribution. I'm actually not sure with Suse.

I installed 11.2 64-bit the other day on a Dell Precision 670 Workstation with 3.6Ghz dual core Xeon, 4Gb Ram, and a new NVidia GF 9400GT 1Gb. The main install is 11.1, and I thought I had the latest NV drivers, but had some trouble with the new card as it wasn't being recognised. I installed the newest driver and kernel modules with YaST and after rebooting it worked fine. If you choose the correct driver it seems to install all the correct dependencies automatically.

I did the 11.2 install into a clean partition, and it came up with everything working "out of the box", including the NV latest driver, and Compiz, etc. The 3d effects were all just there, and I just had to find out which short cut keys to use. I've been holding off from trying KDE 4 till the release version of Suse 11.2 became available, as I had some bad experiences with the earlier versions that came with Suse 11.1. The new isntall is so good, that if it holds up till next week I might make it the default boot.

This is the first time I've used Suse since 10.1. But I'm pretty sure if you change the kernel or xorg, it'll boot to console and you'll have to reinstall the driver.

but it says there's no driver available for opensuse 11.2 yet.

Actually when one installs the nvidia driver the "easy way" one-click or manually installing the repo, driver, and kernel mod from the repo on openSUSE the official kernel updates include automatic recompiling of that installed nvidia module when one reboots after the kernel update.

It is only when one uses the "hard way," which is necessary for when one uses a non-default kernel or when a user wants to use a different nvidia driver version than that offered in the repo, that it becomes necessary to reinstall the driver after a kernel update.

So as long as a user doesn't switch kernels from what those nvidia repo nvidia modules are built against there will be no need to mess with things manually.

As openSUSE official kernel updates stick with the same version but simply install point release patches for the life of the openSUSE version, in my experience there was never a need to reinstall the nvidia driver. The restart after the kernel update transparently rebuilds the nvidia kernel module without any notice to the user.
