Yast SUCKS
 

Okay first off to be fair,

I would say Yast has some positive points -

Its good to have a GUI to do software installiation for linux
Its pretty good at resolving dependencys


Now, I would list these problems with it -

It crashes constantly and no matter how much you press abort it will not shut down!!!
I mean the word abort is self-evident, and it doesnt do it!!!!!!!
I can click on it for hours and it still doesnt do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How many times does that bar freeze half way through a download????????
And guess what????????
There is NO resume!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I mean come on, no resume???????????????
This is a DOWNLOAD program with NO resume?????????????
I am on 56k, but even if I was on broadband, there still needs to be a resume!!!!!!!!!!!

Hasnt Novell realised this as open source now?? Cant someone pull this piece of X$£%^%$
appart and put it back together in a better state????

I have never experienced your frustrations with YaST. I have found it is quite easy to use and the modules are self explanatory. If I may ... to alleviate your frustration ... suggest you try running this app from a terminal. It is not as pretty, but it is quite fast and then you can use ALT keys in conjunction with he corresponding letter codes i.e., "A" for abort.

The reason that yast is the way that it is, is to protect users for fouling the system. No offense, but it is supposed to be fairly idiot proof and is based upon the RPM as far as I can see.

Try hitting Ctrl + ALT + Esc. It should change the cursor to a skull and crossbones. then click on the open/frozen Yast screen and it should close down.
Being it has nothing to do with web browsing, I doubt you will ever see a resume button in it. I personally don't find the need or use for a resume button there or a web browsers either but to each his/her own.
What does this have to do with Novell. They open sourced it. You would like to see it be better, go for it. That is what open source is all about. You see something you think could be better, you fix it.
So helpbring it a million miles closer and fix the problems that you see. I don't really say any of the issues you do except for the few Yast freezes, but I just kill Yast and reope it.

I cant really see any of the problems you mentioned about YAST

I have been using it for 9.1 and 9.3 and let me tell you that it is just perfect

it is a wonderful GUI that helps you configure everything with a GUI without the need of having to type everything in the editors

and actually if you dont like YAST and find it no helpful, then I suggest to change to Debian and Slackware where everything goes through manual configuration

SUSE's default screen depth is 24 bit, if you change that to 16 bit, you will find YaST runs remarkably faster. Try downloading RPM's in Opera or FF, then open Konquerer and click on it from there. The RPM is already D/L'd and will not be dependant on your connection speed.

I quit using SuSE (for the time being) because it's just too slow for me. However, while using it..i've never had yast crash.

SuSe is just slow while booting, but otherwise I found no slowness at all in any of its applications

I second what slacker says - try running Yast directly from the console. Much faster.

It sounds as if you're the only one experiencing those YaST problems. Have you thought about trying another distro?

I've never had a prob. with YasT (since 9.0)nor ever heard of any and happen to think its a great utility. However yesterday, after reading this thread, while upgrading a few aps and resolving dependancies of a new ap, it hung. 3 times i tried to finish it but always hung mid-way on d/l from one specific source(either suse/kde/supp or the ftp:oregon../supp) the d/l'd was slooooow then stopped.
All the other progs.have showed up on my menu, however the last part yast does ,of running the linking or whatever, was not done. how much trouble is that going to cause?
I blame little_penguin for all of this.

try apt

YAST may hang, but the probabilty of that is so slow

but apt never does, try it, you wont regret

YaST is the best tool I have encountered. Never had any of the problems mentioned and I have used Abort -- I only clicked on it 1 time. The download proceeded and immediately prior to pkg installation a pop-up window showed up asking if I really wanted to Abort the install, I clicked yes and that was it. Works great.

I also have to say that the protection it offers to not screw up the system by installing and removing pkgs where dependencies get messed up is fantastic. As mentioned earlier, it is "idiot proof".

I never had any problems with YaST until a couple of days ago, when the update function broke in 9.2. I tried updating to 9.3 via an FTP install, and had the same problem. It looks like SuSE changed the configuration of its update servers. Once I changed the install source to one of SuSE's "complete" mirrors, the problem cleared up, and YaST is working like a charm again :)

I gotta say, I hate Yast too. People say it's so great etc etc but I really just don't like it. I had problems with it crashing/hanging when I tried to add some other repositories to it... and yes, abort does not work!! It was horribly frustrating. And it took me a long time to find out about xkill... actually Yast hanging is the reason I finally Googled for it and found out how to close unresponsive programs. But thank you to the person who contributed Ctrl + Alt + Esc, I didn't know about that... that rocks.

I was hoping Suse would be exactly what I'm looking for but I find Yast and the Control Center to be somewhat difficult, or at least not always easy to figure out. For example, I open up the Control Center, let's say I want to add a user. What category fits... System Administration sounds about right... but nope nothing there. What about a firewall? Security & Privacy?... nope! How the hell should I know what's in Yast2 modules?? Why must that be a separate category? (Besides the fact that you need the root password to change those options.) And you know what else I hate... when you click on Yast2 modules, you have to go out of your way to click on Admin Mode, enter the root password, and if you click on another module... you have to click Admin Mode and enter the password again! Over and over and over again. I find that very annoying, why can't it keep the root password for a while until I close it out.

Anyways... I've ranted enough, sorry ;)

I would say that " ...nobody knows the troubles you have seen......". Well, I am completely new to LINUX. I started with SUSE 9.1 few month ago, I changed to 9.2 and now I am on 9.3. I have never experienced something like that. Yes, I have to ask how to install this or that, I googled a lot, i installed and reinstalled the system so many times that I forgot how many times was that, but I have always find the right answer to the problem. This forum helped me a lot, so I hope that you will find your answers here.
