I have installed XMMS on SUSE 10.1 and it doesnt work.
I don't know why.
I can not add anything to the play list.
When I searched internet in order to find an answer I found information that I can start XMMS via terminal and see error message. I have done it. There is no error message at all, but I still can't add songs to the playlist.
I have deinstalled it and istalled version I have downloaded few months ago: xmms-1.2.10-1.i386.rpm.
He this is really strange. I can add songs, but when I want to play them I see that time line going quick (but I can't hear anything) and then I have noticed that this song was converted and copied to /root as *.wav (I was loged on as root).
What is wrong with Suse 10.1, that installed XMMS (from original DVD) doesnt work.
What can I check.
regards
Rafal
PS. Mplayer works fine ! ...but I want to have XMMS.
The xmms package that comes with SuSE was not built with mp3 support. The same is true for audacity, xine and others. This is due to potential patent issues. You could go the the http://rpm.pbone.org site. Select SuSE Other in advanced search, and download the packman versions of the 10.1 packages. I think that you will also need to get lame. The site can check your dependencies and provide links to download those also.
The only problem I have know is fact that polish characters are not displayed properly (although main language in GNOME is Polish), but maybe I will post this question on polish linux forum.
Every program displays polish characters without problem, but XMMS not.
Do you have this file:
/usr/share/locale/pl/LC_MESSAGES/xmms.mo
Also, look at your ~/.xmms/config file.
Maybe you can change the fonts there:[code]
playlist_font=-adobe-helvetica-medium-r-normal-*-*-100-*-*-p-*-iso10646-1,-*-helvetica-medium-r-*--10-*,-*-fixed-medium-r-*--10-*,*
use_fontsets=TRUE
mainwin_use_xfont=TRUE
mainwin_font=-adobe-helvetica-medium-r-normal-*-*-80-*-*-p-*-iso10646-1-*-helvetica-medium-r-*--8-*,-*-fixed-medium-r-*--8-*,*
[code]
I have checked and I have this file: /usr/share/locale/pl/LC_MESSAGES/xmms.mo
I have also tried to change fonts in several ways (iso coding , windows coding), but without success. Polish characters are still not displayed correctly (menu). This happens if I log on with user rafal where everything is in polish (GNOME, OpenOffice and so on). If I log on with user root, XMMS is in english and strange: polish characters on the play list are displayed correctly (but menu is in english).
How can I force XMMS to use english interface when I log on with the user, who has by default Polish settings? I couldn't find any parameter for that.
Because this is in polish and most of you don't understand polish language, here is what it is about:
Problem with polish characters exists for all programs written in gtk1.
Solution:
Download file:
wget http://micek.no-ip.com/~matrix/gtkrc.tar.bz2
and extract it:
tar -xjf gtkrc.tar.bz2
In the end of the file there should be following entry:
fontset = "-*-suse-sans-medium-r-*-*-12-*,-*-arial-medium-r-*--12-*,*-medium-r-*,*-12-*"
As root user in YAST2 -- System / System Services (Runlevel) we have to switch on xfs ((X Font Server)
It works fine now (menu), but I have problem with polish characters in the play list
