Why do the media players in SuSE have to be so crippled?
I downloaded Xine, a favorite of mine in the past. If I remember correctly, it came with Fedora Core 1, and back then I was able to play pretty much any video file with it...DivX from Internet Archive, Windows Media (even streamed), etc. with no modification. Now I have Suse 10 OSS...I have Xine on here, and it will almost do nothing. Well, it'll play the sound from my Real Video files, and maybe the audio on my OGG files...but about nothing else. Not even Divx or Xvid!
So, I was a good boy and tried to solve my problem using the internet. Bingo! I found a site that said the solution was to go over to mplayerhq.hu and download the Mplayer essentials package, unpack it, and put it in /usr/lib/win32. Did that, re-opened Xine and...still NOTHING but an annoying message! Logged out and back in...still nothing. What's going on? The path to the Win32 codecs in the config file is /usr/lib/win32, the same I put them in....?
Go to Software Management now and search for MPlayer. Should come up, check the box for that and the pluggins and ACCEPT. Should install all codecs for you and everything. Works great
Works perfectly here after a VERY long download (our broadband wireless system here went out of business a long time ago, and I don't think Monet's system supported Linux).
No problem. I would also suggest checking the "Sticky" at the top of this forum for more Suse 10.0 Repositories. Packman is a very good one, but its not from Novell so you have to trust who you put as an installation source. I would highly suggest adding all the Novell ones because then you get all the packages, like Java 1.5 or Mozilla Thunderbird... all from Yast Software Management.

Ohhhh, i had to enable refresh ... Seriously, i could not understand why everyone thought Packman was so good, but now i can see!

I tried doing this but am maybe not understanding exactly how to do it. Can someone please explain it to me. I would be very greatful
open a console, type 'su' followed by the root password, then 'installation_sources -a http://packman.iu-bremen.de/suse/10.0', then start YaST -> Software Management and install whatever you like. If you are planning to install at a later time, make sure you refresh the source (YaST -> Installation Source -> highlight source, press 'Refresh'->On / or Edit -> Refresh).
