So I have in various combinations updated my system, installed and deleted packages, added / removed sources, updated and not updated those sources, including packman, and they still won't play. Argh! They still won't play!?! Codec wasn't found.
I feel stupid, angry, frustrated, and generally upset.
I changed my major from computer science to political science cause I guess I'm really dumb.
Sorry for the ranting. I look forward to anyone making fun of me.
SuSE can be a PIG with non free codecs.
Personally, I add libxine and w32 from packman and install libxine with rpm -Uvh xxx.rpm and that seems to do the trick.
If you want multimedia there's better distros out there that aren't puposefuly broken. Simply Mepis, K/Ubuntu, Blag to name a few. Mepis comes with mplayer and mplayerplug-in already installed and the marillat source needs "ticking" in the appropriate box (in Synaptic > Settings/Repositiries) to get it added thus making libdvdcss and win32codecs available.
With Ubuntu it's not much harder, you just need to add marillat by hand to /etc/apt/sources.list. Mplayer and so on are all available via Synaptic.
Hm I have no idea.......... But there have been videos in wmv format that I haven't been able to play. I just didn't care a lot to search for a solution.
Have you tried playing this video on Windows Media Player with wine or in a windows computer? Just to see if it is corrupted or anything.
I'm a fan of easy and simple. If you just add Packman to your installation source, then go to Software Management. Search for Mplayer. Check both the plugin and player and Yast will automatically select the win32 codecs and a few others. Click continue and you should be set.

It was as simple as that for me on Suse 10.0
Didn't work. And yes, my system is dual-boot and the videos work in Windows. There was recently an update to Windows. I'm also thinking that it might just be the x86_64 version since so many other's works. There are two packages right? I can't uninstall them and reinstall them because on an update it messed up all the dependencies and it wants to roll 286 packages back.

Just one question: Are you using x86_64? If so, it's presently not possible to view .wmv files. The updates are for x86_32, and there has been no workaround at this time.
As far as making fun of you, Not me! You wouldn't believe some of the bone-headed things i've attempted.
yeah, I sure am trying to do it for x86_64. So when will I know when the fixes are in?
Sorry, as far as I am aware, they are not in. I suspect that when they get in, it will involve a recompile of the Kernel, much like one must currently do with many winmodem drivers. I can assure you that it has been a matter of frustration for me too.

Don't put yourself down. Try a different distro.
This is probably the biggest complaint Novell recieves. I have hope that in their for-pay version that they will include DVD codecs etc in 10.1.
By the way, there are different reasons we each choose different distros, maybe the original poster doesn't like Mepis or Kubuntu for whatever reason. Our job here isn't to give the easy answer of "get a different distro," it's to help people with the problem they described.
