Windows and Linux Internet Sharing

A friend of mine wants to share the internet connection (aDSL) between a Windows XP and a SuSE 9.3 desktop (the WinXP computer is the one connected to the internet) but he is a newbie and doesn't know how to do it.

Unfortunately I don't use SuSE and therefore I can't do much to help him. Can anyone please write a small guide on how to share the Internet connection between those PC's?

- configure XP to share the connection (in the help of windows at the start menu choise help and support and type share connection and gateway)
- configure linux to connect thougth th xp (in the console, type route add default gw XP-IP)

Hi,

Yes, you need to configure XP to share the internet connection. Then on the Linux machine, in YaST, check that the network card which connects to the Windows machine is configured to obtain its address via DHCP. That should be all you need to do.

So I should tell him to enable "internet connection sharing" under Windows and then set his network card to obtain its address via DHCP? What if he has a static IP on his Linux PC?

Why don't you tell him to get a router for his internet connection and then go from there? It would make life so much easier.

He bought his modem only a few days ago and he didn't know it was not Linux-compartible.

Installing a router for the internet connexion don't mean to connect it directely on the ISP, but connect it to the modem and the router will configure and learn the route to acces internet from inside, to connect internet from outside to inside, to connect more than one box, or a switch. Many of them have an integrated switch.
know, tell us what is the model of his modem.

Nobody, he just can't install the driver...

His modem is a Copperjet 800

try to collect some features of the modem (manufacturer, chips, revision date) and search these word in google.
I saw one time a modem ADSL coppernic. Maybe the same manufacturer.
try their site too. maybe a link or driver made for linux.

Unfortunately there is no official Linux driver for his modem. The unofficial driver from the link above should work, however, he can't compile it, so he thought he could just set-up a LAN to surf the web via a Windows PC.

He has already downloaded it, but he can't compile it.

Anyway, he tried to do what you suggested in post #2 but he still can't load websites...

Any suggestions?

in case o f the configuration seems like :
W-XP connected to the modem and has internet sharing enabled.
W-XP has1 NIC for the modem (or USB in place?) and 1 NIC for the linux box.
we are interested by the communication between W-XP and linux.
Has your friend since configured the linux box to know "how get acces to the world" ?
Can he ping from linux the windows?
Has he add the route and the gateway in place on linux ?
