I'm trying to get my home network working but am having some problems. I've done pretty much everything this site says and I can access the other computer with smb://192.168.1.100. The problem is that on the Desktop (in SuSE) when I click on "Network Browsing" then "Windows Network" I get the following error messege: "Unable to find any workgroups in your local network. This may be caused by an internal firewall." How can I get it to show MSHOME as a workgroup there? I don't understand how it can see and access the windows XP computer but it can't see the workgroup that both machines are part of :\
first of all, you have to make winxp to share files and folder by changing some options in winxp firewall...
then you have to look at suse 9.2 firewall settings in yast (take a look on samba configuration too)..
then you can see your winxp share folders from suse...
I can access the win xp machine's shared folders. The problem is when I click on "Network Browsing" on the SuSE desktop, then click "Windows Network" it says "Unable to find any workgroups in your local network. This may be caused by an internal firewall."
I can access the win XP machine fine though if I type in smb://the-ip-address, then I can browse through the shared folders too.
I would check the XP firewall. I think the default for 9.2 is to turn the firewall on.
Try turning both off first and see if it is fixed. I had the same problem. I could //the-ip-address and could see the shared drives and printers but samba could not see them. Also my other XP machines could not see each other becasue of the default firewall settings.
I also have tried everything in all these forums that i can find:
ive got Suse 9.2 setup nicely except for the Networking sharing of files.
ive got
1)linux Suse machine
2)WinXP boxes which for argument sake, One is named VIDEO and the other VIDSERVER
ive got samba running and config'd thru Yast and in Control Panel.
from the Suse machine i can see my WinXP boxes.
When i click on Machine named VIDEO,
i can see all folders that are
in that C:\ drive,
but can not execute or copy any of them.
when i do try to copy or execute
i get the error
""An error occurred while loading smb://VIDEO/C/SCANDISK.LOG:
Could not read smb://VIDEO/C/SCANDISK.LOG.""
Now on WinXP box named VIDSERVER
When i click on that share i immediatly get the "Authorization Dialog" box
and in that box i type my username and password exactly like i do when
i am using WinXp.
And the "Authorization Dialog" box just keeps coming back at me
<access Denied> when i finally click cancel
ive disabled all firewalls on all three machines to troubleshoot.
when i walk to the other room and on VIDEO i can browse and copy/execute files on both
WInXP VIDSERVER and on the Suse machine..
here is just a funny thing, maybe not, but also in my "Network Browsing" in Suse
the shares that are listed are the following
VIDEO -this ine is correct winxp
VIDSERVER -this one is correct winxp
ROBNIX -this one is correct this is my Suse Linux machine
FRIGGINFAST -how does this one show up ?? that is the windowsXP machine which is Where my Linux is running on_Dual Boot Setup
(frigginfast not showing up anylonger... but it was weird to see it there)
Well, I was having the same problem and I did a bunch of things, i dont know which one solved the problem but here it is.
I configured file sharing in my linux box (suse 9.2)
I disabled the firewall
And I also went and opened up a samba port in the firewall.(althought this doesnt really matter since the firewall is already off)
I made a new WORKGROUP Called SHARED ( for both windows(2000 pro) and linux.
After that I went to network browsing and "windows network"
and there it was my WORK GROUP, SHARED.
ok,, i havent booted up suse in a week or so.
so when i booted today, i was able to get into and open files on my
home networked xp box , but only the one named VIDEO
I do not have a password set up on that one , i just "go right in"
but on the VIDEOSRV box i still cant get by the Authentication screen.
ok but now i cant get on the internet!!!!
what the F is going on.
i guess this is why i have been trying to get LINUX to replace
Microsoft Since Windows98 came out.
ok thats 7 YEARS.
and i still cant get a distro of linux, and ive tried about 12 of them
since 1998 to be able to replace microsoft.
I would PAY money to get a distro running
and i have , Red Hat ... back in 1999.
but that didnt pan out
