Depends what kernel upgrade you want to do? If this is SuSE kernel, then you even don't need to do anything to the nvidia drivers, assuming that you have nvidia installed with YAST. After kernel update installed before drivers will work. This is the major difference between YAST installation and "manual" installation of nvidia rivers.
If you think about 2.6.11.x, then you need at least nvidia ver 7167, earlier drivers are incompatible. These can only be installed manually.
I have Xorg 6.8.2-0.1 installed and no problems at all.
