will 9.2 fix my problems

hey guys. i'm fairly new to suse, i've been using it for about less than 2 months now.

I have bought a new laptop since. hp pavilion zv5000z. I have amd-64 3200+ with nvidia 64 and 15.4 widescreen(1280X800)brightview and broadcom 54g/bluetooth.

i have 3 major, but i'm pretty sure fixable problems. ofcourse i'll need something like ndiswrapper for wifi. I also need nvidia drivers for 3d support, but i dont' know how to fix my widescreen problem. 9.1 doesn't seem to be able to support widescreens. it would boot normaly, but after getting into a gui like kde, it would tell me to fix my screen cause it wasn't able to get the x- y- values. and then, if i would hit ctrl+alt+f1 to get to command line, the screen keeps scrolling very fast, like a tv with a bad signal. i have since fiddled with different screen options and such, and now the gui wont even show.

i am going to reinstall suse, but i was wondering if 9.2 would fix any of theses problems, preferably the problem i'm having with my screen.

thanks
jason

was the screen having "real problems" when it said that your screen was sending x y values?

is this scrolling on your laptop screen or external tv/monitor?

this is the screen on my laptop.

it wasn't haveing any "real" problems when it asked for my x- y- values. well, my gui didn't have any real problems, but the command prompt was doing that old tv with bad reception scrolling. in the gui though, it just said that my monitor did not return any x- y- values, and that i should prolly fix it manualy, cause some fonts wont show properly. I have found a link where someone had a widescreen pavilion, i think, and he mentions how he fixed it, but i got different results(no gui). ofcourse, i prolly may have done something wrong, but still.

When trying to fix the monitor, yast(yast2?) had a ton of HP options to choose from, but non of them where widescreen. I was hoping 9.2 would be different(better).

I had the same problem on my laptop, but I don't have widescreen. I used sax2 to manually set the x/y values and have been running fine since.

I have used both SuSE 9.0 Home and SuSE 9.1 Professional on a computer with an Nvidia onboard graphics card and also using an ATI Radeon 9500 graphics card. I experienced no difference between the two cards. SuSE 9.0 did not report any problems with the x and y coordinates. I was quite surprised at getting the x,y coordinate message on installing 9.1. I have installed 9.1 over a dozen times on the same computer, and have had several problems with it. I have have found that with 9.1, you do not want an upgrade; you want a clean install. The best approach is first, to simply take the default: don't try to configure the graphics card and monitor manually. I have had SuSE crash several times while doing so, always resulting in an unusable graphics configuration. So just go with the default. Second, I have found that the error about the x, y coordinates is not really the problem it appears to be. Simply answer, No: the computer will run perfectly fine without it, and it will eventually stop asking you about it. It actually creates more problems to answer Yes. As for the Nvidia 3d support, that's actually Nvidia's problem. SuSE does supply updated Nvidia drivers, but they do not include 3D support, and the same is true of the drivers for the ATI Radeon 9500. You most likely have to download those drivers from Nvidia, and I know they have them. I am not surprised at the lack of wide screen support, which I have noticed running FreeBSD on a laptop on on MandrakeMove on my desktop.

I can't really speak authoritatively for 9.2 until it's out and I've seen it, nor do I think it's fair to do so until it is, but I can hazard a guess based on my experience upgrading from 9.0 to 9.1, that, unless SuSE has done something in creating te upgrade that I'm really not expecting them to do (based on past performance, especially with the x, y coordinate problem), the answer to the question "will 9.2 fix these problems?" is most likely, "No."

The problems that you mention can all be taking care of if you just use the YOU (Yast Online Update), the 1st update after the installation or update from 9.0 for that matter (I've done both on laptops) will take care of the x/y message and will also give you the option of dowloading the NVIDIA drivers.

You just want to make sure to not touch Sax2 or Yast minitor config before activating SUSEWatcher or running YOU from YAST.

Let me know if this helps.

The point about the update is a good one that I had not thought of. The x, y coordinate error message did disappear for me, and I run the Yast Online Update (YOU) religiously. It's always a great idea to have a thoroughly up to date system. Don't leave home without it. However, my running the update may be WHY the message disappeared, as the other messages indicate.

i have done it...very easy....using suse 9.1 pro you said ?

if your using pro you have the compiler and other tools needed to install from source.

after all the updates ( including the kernel ) THEN install ndiswrapper from yast using install and remove software...don't bother getting the newest one as it seems to not worth with broadcom...or well anyhow.

after yast has installed ndiswrapper for you....AFTER you updated suse with YOU:::

you need the windows drivers: (bcmwl5.inf and bcml5.sys....they might be different for your card...which one do you have exactly? ) put them in like /etc/wlandrivers...or something easy like that. ( you'll need root to write to /etc )

then just

ndiswrapper -i (driver.inf location) mine was= ndiswrapper -i /etc/wlandrivers/bcmwl5.inf

then ndiswrapper -l

it should say that blahblahblah present

then you need to use yast to install a wireless card:

open up yast go to network devices, network card. it will try to detect network stuff...then it'll come to a screen where it shows you what it found.
it will not find yours.

so where you see "other (not detected)" click on configure...

set it to wireless and do what ever else you wish right now but not needed. then just accept everything...now in /etc/sysconfig/network you will have a config file we can edit later.

now back in terminal do( again as root, su -, or just log in as root): modprobe ndiswrapper

then do "iwlist scann" see if a wireless card comes up with anything... if you reach this point...and you find an access point and a wireless network (with an ssid ) go into /etc/sysconfig/network ... find the config file for the card.....ifcfg-"device name from iwlist" and edit it with the info you need. ( again need root )

i don't know how much you know about networking...so i will leave it there for now...but if you need help obviously just post here.

Well, I'M USING 9.1 PRO, but I'm a Java programmer (only in Windows), not a Linux programmer. I don't know diddly squat about compiling and installing from source, and not a lot about configuring. I was afflicted with the curse of Windows first. I can install and run Red Hat and Mandrake and SuSE and (command-line) FreeBSD, connect to the Internet, configure the desktop, change the wallpaper, and that's about it. I've been meaning to devote about three months to just learning Linux, but unfortunately things keep having to get done in the meantime, so I continue repairing/using the Windows virus. MY desktop and screen work fine, it's just that Konqueror and Mozilla and Firefox have no @ sign or half of the other symbols you need to type on a US keyboard on the Internet, while OpenOffice and the other applications have ALL of them. Also, KDE does not play a sound on 9.1 Pro on boot-up; I've used two dozen live distros and every one of them does, as well as SuSE 9. Nor can I play DVDS. I know the DVD decoder is a proprietary issue. But SuSE has never explained to me why the keyboard is screwed up and there's no boot-up sound, nor do I have any idea how to fix it.

*** the manual way

if you choose to configure the monitor and video card manually you will get a screen asking witch card to configure ... click the card and it will bring up a window on the 3rd tab is the x- y- option.

measure your screen with a ruler in mm and multiply those by 10 test it and if the test looks good save it and you wont have that problem. You can also muliply them by 5 and get smaller fonts kinda like using 96dpi vs 72dpi. or you can put in the actual mm in those 2 settings and get really tiny fonts. or mulitply by 100 and get huge fonts.
