Why wont linux shut down?
I use a dual boot pc with windows xp and Suse linux 10 installed.
I am having one problem after another. I still cant get my wireless to work i dont understand most of it yet still i want to learn how to use it. My problem is that when i tell it to shut down it go as far as the blue screen with the computer, card, hard drive logo's on then it frezzes. Please help!!! |
have you thried the three finger salute?
it does cause an orderly shutdown unless suse disabled it. check the initscripts for runlevel zero rc0.d or initd.0[ shut down ] see what is getting called and when, check the system logs to see what the last item was to shut down properly. the next item in the initscripts is the one causing the problem. if you are using reboot instead of shut down, then that is the runlevel 6 script. rc6.d /initd.6 the initscripts are in the /etc folder |
I dont really know what you mean by all that, i am a complete newbie to linux. sorry
|
Wireless support isn't the best in Linux yet - you pretty much expect to take a while sorting that out, I'm afraid.
As far as the computer shutting down properly: Often this is due to a power-control setting not being set properly, so the OS effectively doesn't have the ability to take the final step and kill the power after shutting everything else down. It's an ACPI or APM setting in one of the init scripts, if I recall correctly. . . |
response to #3: "The three fingered salute" is just Ctrl+Alt+Delete
|
switch to verbose mode on shutdown.the last item at the bottom of the screen will be where it is hanging.

Im sorry guys but i am a complete noob at this. I am used to having my hand held by Microsoft's products At least they have good wireless support Thanks for the help guys, |
after it logs you out there is a splash screen that comes up.pressing ESC kills the splash and lets you see step-by-step what the system is doing.it's the same as the startup screens "Press Esc for more information" that is in the bottom left corner.

ok piscikeeper i will try that. although i have a feeling that it may do nothing, as i think it freezes.
Thanks anyway Any other ideas welcome |
it will freeze.the point of doing it this way is to start pinpointing where the problem is.software,or more likely hardware.if your wireless is using a PCMCIA card, that could well be the issue.

Ok but isnt a pcmia card for laptops? i am using desktop with a pci wireless card |
the purpose is to know what service is being shutdown when it freezes.it could be an audio issue or any number of things.
desktop PCMCIA is unusual, but not unheard of http://www.elandigitalsystems.com/adapter/wlan.php |
maybe kernel version
maybe the problem is your kernel version.
Try this: open the /etc/yaird/Default.cfg and add these MODULE piix MODULE ide-generic MODULE ide-disk then write in console: dpkg-reconfigure linux-image-2.6.14-2-686 now you can try as shutdown -h now I dont know I hope that helps you. I read it on a web site. |
i doubt it, as dpkg is a debian only thing.
|
well have you guys ever had this problem at all?
Or encountered anything similar, i mean it is only the shuting down part. I can reboot fine |
