Why is access denied to Cupsd.conf in OpenSuse 11.4?

Bugzilla says I need to access Cupsd.conf in order to fix a printing problem which has been persistent for months now, in OpenSuse 11.3 and 11.4. (The problem did not occur with 11.2)

What happens is total mess-up of every print job after page 1, only curable by printing each page separately. The answer according to Bugzilla is to adjust the Ripcache value in /etc/cups/cupsd.conf. But whenever I try to access this file, (or any .conf file) I get the message 'access denied'. Logging in as root doesn't help.

My printer is Canon Pixma MP210.

Can anyone help please?

I think you may have tried to run a gui editor as root, and the access denied you are seeing is because root is denied access to the screen, rather than being able to access the file itself. The solution in this case is to start a gui editor preceding the command with "kdesu", or a console text editor (like vim or emacs) preceding the command with `sudo'.

Another option is to use Cups web interface to edit the file. Enter "http://localhost:631" in the browser.
Select the "Administration" tab. Click the "Edit Configuration File". After making your changes, click save. You will be asked for the username and password. Enter the user "root" and the root password to save your changes.

Please don't log into KDE or Gnome as root. Do so only if it is impossible to log in as a normal user.

I used the CUPS web interface as suggested and changed Ripcache fom 128 to 1280 and printing now seems to be OK. For this relief much thanks! It has taken 6 months to get this answer but I have it at last.
