Your right about the polishing. My old lady thought I bought a new computer when she saw my laptop sitting there with 9.2 on the screen. She still don't believe I 've had it for two years.
Assuming I had missed something I went poking around in sax2 again and indead I did miss the many mouse configuration options.
I setup my touchpad as synaptics on psaux and now it works great with the sax2 setup.
Therefore YaST wins again.
Also I just discovered that the bottom area also functions as forward and back buttons in Firefox. And there are tap zones for right and middle click. Awesome!

Suse is one of the best distro's I've ever used/currently use.
Sure, it has it's bugs. Then again, so do all distro's
The thing is - as previously stated in this thread - you can tweak your OS all you want, but sometimes it's refreshing to have a system that works straight out of the box: SuSE is that system.
Though I have always (and alway's will) use other distro's, SuSE has been the one true "keeper". The fact that i can have a solid, stable, powerful, and fully functional system post install -with no need for additional configuration (even though I always modify it beyond recognition)-has never failed to impress me. 9.3 is no exception.
My turn
This is from a User that just wants an OS that doesn't get eaten by viruses..doesn't want to have constant upgrades of applications at hundreds of dollars each months...etz.
I have started using Suse from version 7? then 8.2 and now 9.1
All mine have been purchased.
Yes I do have gripes with it...
It's highly bloated during install
It does take forever to boot up on a low level Laptop, and XP in comparison boots up a lot quicker on the same Laptop.
Things that I couldn't get to work in 8.2 now started to work in 9.1 but then others that worked flawlessly in 8.2 are now not working at all...are we going backwards here?
Her is an example:
Sound: I have chased this problem now for a fair while and can get it to work in runlevel 3 using Alsa but when the gui comes up the Laptop freezes.
This was fully functioning in 8.2 and I have spend hours reading every fix that's out there.
Go and use Kuickshow and whatch a full photo CD.
Now have a look how your hardrive space just get's eaten up.
I just can not find where these files go. It seems to directly load all the files onto the HD..why? and where do they go?
I have been using for 3 years now and would consider myself to be just moderately capable, enough to get Samba working and using File sharing and Printer sharing with MS PC's.
But I shouldn't have to be a programmer or System Engineer to get this to work.
Yes I will keep using it and am considering to get 9.3 Pro but I am also hoping that with new advancements comes a better support for the more basic staff.
It's the same Laptop that started with 7.? so things should start to work more and more and not suddenly have something else not working.
I am waiting for the Version that is good enough to install on y bigger PC's and then move the family over slowly to linux.
It still needs far more support from the vendors and espatially game makers to convince my wife and son to come across.
I love it's security....you can't break it and it's User permission are easy to use which is importend to limit the other family members from deleting OS required files.
A PC is there to be used as a tool to accomplish your tasks or enjoy some functionality and shouldn't be the complete focus itself.
It's a bit of a disappointment to see all the problems already with 9.3...I would have preferred for it to be mature enough now to see just the occasional odd configuration to be a problem with some obscure software or hardware.
My ONLY real complaint with Linux is the installation of certain programs. Thankfully, YaST can be a huge help with sources like pacman. But, there are still applications you have to compile and install. It can be a pain in the @$$... that and having to deal with the 3D acc. and sound card issues... You'd think that two of the most important aspects of using the computer (video and sound) wouldn't take someone weeks to figure out how to configure. Just do a search and see how many "Help me" posts we have on this board regarding sound/video. Really, these topics should be a non-issue. They should be, by far, the easiest to configure. And, yes, before someone says it - I KNOW it's not completely the fault of Linux... the vendors need to step up to the plate and offer better solutions too... then again, if you were a vendor would you be willing to spend the time and money it takes to create a "solution" for every type of distro out there? It's sort of a catch 22 I suppose.
However, in a way... I guess I kind of like the idea that Linux is a little more difficult to use than Windows in some aspects. I know it sounds weird, but our community isn't going to attract a whole lot of "AOL users" if you know what I mean...
But, with everything - there comes the good and the bad. Honestly, I love my SuSE 9.2 install and I really have no plans (at the moment) to switch to 9.3. I do, however, currently keep a Windows partition for all my games (Quake III, HL, Unreal Tourny, and others) - why? Because simply put... I don't have the knowledge on how to configure my Linux with 3D acceleration... and my time is limited. It took me a week to figure out how to get my iPod working (which was actually no fault of Linux's at all) - and it wasn't for the help of a coulpe of folks here - It probably still wouldn't be working... eventually? Yes - I would have eventaully figured it out... but again when you're limited on time - the last thing you need is an OS that demands hours / days /weeks to get up and going 100%
As for my sound - I have a Sound Blaster card AND an onboard sound card. With the SB I get zero sound - with the onboard I get sound. So, I just use the onboard. I'll probably just go out and buy a more compatible sound card down the road, rather than suffer through trying to get the SB working.
The thing is - you have to weigh the good with the bad against the other OS's.
With WIndows I had to deal with countless virii - spyware - malware - instability - security issues - contant crashing - $$$ and more $$$ - an OS that eat memory like a fat man at free pizza fesitval.
With Linux all I have to deal with is getting games and sound to work... (for me personally). At the cost? ... hmmm... close to free.
Linux > Windows.
So, despite some of the issues that we have to deal with - we still have an OS and a community that far far far greater than Apple or Microsuck could ever dream.
Microsoft really sucks, and is over priced for what you get. Mac.. well that one speaks for itself... WAY over priced. *nix's rule the OS world in my opinion, and nothing will compare. The power of *nix cannot be compared by microsoft, and the best part is, if you choose you distro carefully, it is FREE. With Microsoft you would have to steal it, and I have personally seen a lot of that.
However, after saying that, each to there own. If an individual has the money to throw away on inferior products, then so be it.
Tried Mandrake-- awesome hardware detection -- dependency hell, so bad it makes me leary of any RPM distro.
Gentoo -- Fast! -- except when compiling which was always and then ofcourse the crashing upon reboot, and the month long install process. I swear I think they intentionally make it that hard to install so that you will hang out and fight the bugs. If you LOVE system maintence CHOOSE Gentoo
Ubuntu -- Slick, easy to use -- Sound Issue's that they openly admit to and have no fix for --tv card never worked
Currently using
Mepis, apt-get rocks, everything works, kinda I am having trouble getting support, I want to use the native nvidia drivers and no one can answer my question. I get a lot of " don't try it" sorry but I want to use the full potential of my pc.
Distribution: Xubuntu 9.10, Gentoo 2.6.27 (AMD64), Darwin 9.0.0 (arm)

I don't think that SuSE is any better or worse then other distros. It is very easy to use (my 58yo dad uses suse) but I don't like how novell handles it. I mean you can go to the slackware site and get a link to get the full .isos off bit torrent. On the suse site the only downloads are evaluation or ftp install and, only the ftp is available for cd. They make it on cds but you cant download it. and I couldn't find the cd .isos anywhere else on the net even though the licence says that if you buy it you can redistribute it. SuSE and RedHat are both getting a little to commercial for me. This is linux it's suposed to be free. I should be able to get the whole version for free not just a selection. Can't they make enough money without making it difficult to get without buying a full box set. I can't afford that set. I dont need a printed manual or anything like that. I'm still going to use it but, novell won't get my money after trying to force it out of me (and successfully forcing me to buy a dvd-rom)
abisk00, sorry if I offended you with my "SuSE 9.2 sucks" post. I've got most of the kinks worked out now. Now I'm off to the mall with the iBook to download the entire mirror and put it on my own apt repository at home.
