Why a gecko?
 

OK, this is kinda a dumb question, and it really doesn't have a lot to do with any technical issues, but I gotta know:

How did a gecko (or salamander or whatever the hell that is) come to be the mascot for Suse?

And I think that I have probably the coolest home Suse mascot. This guy usually sits under my LCD, he cam out to pose for his picture:

It's not a gecko, it's a chameleon.

And to answer why: why the heck not?

OK, a chameleon. Sure, why not. But is that the reason? Why not? I know how Linus Torvalds hit upon the penguin, but how did the Suse forefathers hit upon a chameleon? And where is the thread on this that I missed? I guess I off to google chameleons! ;)

Senseless discussion!

It started out more like a toad but is now recognised as a Chameleon.
Site here with everything you could want to know about it in German and English.
