Which type of drive do I have...sda or hda ?

I'm trying to determine where my mbr residue...I believe its on hda (xp)...here is Knoppix and gparted:
Knoppix =
hda1 200GB (xp)
hdb3 80GB (suse 11.4)
hdc dvd rw
hdd cdrw
hde5 250GB (backup)

gparted with filesystem type =
sda1 ntfs 200GB (xp)
sdb1 swap 80GB (suse 11.4)
sdb2 ext4
sdb3 ext3
sdc5 backup 250

My system is old, using IDE drives so whats with the sda drive id's?
I thought the newer serial drives started with sda sdb etc...???

It's probably that the ide drivers were replaced with a "pata" subsystem a while ago, maybe 5 years? As I understand it, the subsystem written for sata drivers was worth also being used for parallel drivers, i.e. IDE ones, so it became the preferred driver for it, both with a sdX naming convention.
