Firefox was updated to 1.5.0.4 today. I started Firefox on my iBook and clicked on 'search for updates' and it found it right away. I started Firefox in SUSE 10.1 and looked in the prefs for updates and it doesn't find anything.
Is the update feature broken in the Linux version?
I know where to get the rpm from, my question was about the update feature built into v1.5.0. With the Mac and Windows version you can check for the latest version, and if it finds one, you can update without downloading the whole app.
After doing some research, I found the answer. You have to run Firfox as root in Linux in order to update. I tried it last night but it didn't work. And there was no 'check for update' option under help or in the prefs. The update may work under root in a few days, but it appears to me that the Firefox developers haven't figured out how to make automatic updates work in the Linux version because of permissions.
SuSE 10.1 screwed up so bad that it stops installing RPMs all together. In desperation and annoyance I tried Ubuntu 6.0.6 -- it works. I noticed the lack of updates thing with Firefox on Ubuntu. The update parameter in preferences is grayed out. I looked in about:config "update" and found app.update.enabled "locked". Perhaps its the same in SuSE. I haven't found a way to unlock but have never noticed a locked parameter in Firefox before.

I am so p!ssed off with Suse 10.1 and its excuse for package manager (Today it wanted to update KDEBase and then complained that it couldn't. To make matters worse, the warning is displayed in such large letters on a single line that one cannot read the full message.
Anyway, I'm moving to another distro as soon as my head stops spinning. I'm tossing up between UBUNTU or Fedora....
Seems to me the Suse Yast team as managed to fix something that wasn't broken

I just installed a bunch of updates from software.opensuse.org with YaST and it worked fine.
Well, I'm trying to install a package - You know, open the directory in Konqueror, click the package, click the button that says "Install with Yast". 20 minutes later, after reporting "Reading Package", I get "The Following Packages haven't Been found on the medium" - in this case Firefox downloaded to a local directory from the suse ftp projects directory.
All the great functionality I had in 10.0 is gone. Now, I concede it is due to my own stupidity for "upgrading" to 10.1
confused_bof, I would recommend you install from the command line until SUSE upgrades their package management system. I know there's upgrades in the testing phase right now that seem to be fixing some of the problems.

I'm a GUI person and have been since the days of the AMIGA. I find command lines frustrating to the point that I regard them as a PITA. I know that doesn't suit a lot of Linux devotees.

See. I told you I was a GUI person
"MozillaFirefox = 1.5.0.3 is needed by (installed) MozillaFirefox-translations-1.5.0.3-7.i586"
Whem I attempt to install firefox 1.5.0.4 - I have no idea what that means.
