Angry VNC not functioning anymore after KDE upgrade

Hi everybody,

I upgraded my Suse linux 9.3 box with the newest KDE release via yast. Before the upgrade I was able to contact the my pc via VNC and I would get the login manager. However, after upgrading I found out that I am not able anymore to contact my box externally via VNC. I also installed opensuse 10 on another box, enabled VNC and that worked, but here also after upgrading KDE , VNC doesn't work anymore.

If I try to contact my pc with a VNC client (tightvnc or realvnc), it returns an error immediately or shows a VNC window very shortly and returns an error like " socket error while reading" . To find out what's going on I did a " tail /var/log/messages" on my pc and i found the following:

Nov 10 20:21:03 bernie kernel: kdm[7259]: segfault at 0000000000000000 rip 0000000000418248 rsp 00007fffff8b59d0 error 4
Nov 10 20:21:03 bernie syslog-ng[3834]: Changing permissions on special file /dev/xconsole
Nov 10 20:21:03 bernie syslog-ng[3834]: Changing permissions on special file /dev/tty10
Nov 10 20:21:03 bernie kdm[5476]: Unknown session exit code 0 (sig 11) from manager process

So it seems that there is a problem with KDM.There must be more people with the same problem but I haven't found anything yet on this issue. Anybody any clue what's going wrong and how to fix it ?

Thanks,

Mcguyver

verify your $HOME/.vnc/xstartup file.
they must point to the newer executable for your vnc session.

As an alternate to VNC take a look at FreeNX http://freenx.berlios.de/

I believe 9.3 and 10.0 include FreeNX in the distribution but I'd get the lastest code.

FreeNX is much faster than VNC, more secure, easier to setup IMO and uses a very polished multiOS client that is freely available from NoMachine http://www.nomachine.com/download.php
