I found the following link on the VideoLAN forums pertaining to an issue that I am experiencing with vlc 0.8.6 from the Packman repository regarding the position of the volume bar in the main interface:
I have attempted the install numerous times, and still with the same result. Has anyone else experienced this problem, and what was done to resolve it? Thanks.
I used YaST to install both packages (after uninstalling each one beforehand) from both the packman and videolan repositories, both yielding the same results. I am going to try the 1-click install to see if this does anything.
I have tried installing vlc from the 1-Click Install from the Videolan and still continue to experience the same problem with the volume bar. This problem was has been persistent from an existing openSuSE 10.3 installation to a fresh one performed last week on the same machine. I have installed, removed and reinstalled numerous times from different sources, all yielding the same results. I don't understand this problem, as on my 10.2 computer vlc works just fine. Is no one else experiencing this problem?
Has anyone successfully installed and used the 0.9.0 beta release in openSuSE 10.3 that is available from the Videolan repository? I installed this a few weeks ago, but was unable to play any multimedia files with it. I installed this version via YaST as well, but had no success with it.

I need to correct my earlier statement! I, too, did notice that my volume bar is half shown. So yes, I do have this problem as your mentioned. I didn't notice it until I decided to watch a DVD and thought of this post. I was recalling from memory earlier on. My mistake.
No, I do not know how to fix this, but it's not a big deal for me.
