Video probs with 9.3 install...

I am new to this, so bear with me...

I am trying to set up a box for a server to use in my mixed Mac/PC network. The intall completes fine, but when I reboot, before it can completely boot, my video blanks out. I know the system is still running since I can hear a startup sound well after the video kicks out.

I thought it was the video card or the BIOS settings, but those are fine. In fact, I installed Linspire on it just to check it out and no video issues at all.

I really want to use SUSE for this project due to the stability and ease of use I have read about, but this is making me re-think that.

System info -

Asus A7V600-X motherboard
Sempron 3000+
Seagate 120GB HD
256 MB PC3200 RAM
BFG GeForce MX 4000 PCI (128MB RAM)
350W PSU
generic CD-RW/DVD-ROM

Nothing else is installed.

Any suggestions?

after the system boots try hitting ctrl+alt+F1 to pull up a command line, if you can get to a command line login as root, the cd to /etc/X11. make a backup of your xorg.conf file (cp xorg.conf xorg.conf.old) then copy xorg.conf.install over the original config file (cp xorg.conf.install xorg.conf) once thats done type /etc/init.d/xdm restart this should pull up the graphical login manager.

If you are unable to get a command line by pressing ctrl+alt+F1 then reboot and at the boot manager there should be a button to press for more options, when you hit that button you should get a line to enter commands, type "init 3" then boot linux, this should give you a command line where you can perform the changes in the X11 folder I mention above, then instead of typing /etc/init.d/xdm restart, type "init 5" this should start the system up to a graphical interface.

If you still have issues let us know otherwise good luck.

It turns out that the installer selected the wrong monitor and as a result, it would "time out" and turn off.

I reinstalled SUSE and changed the monitor in YaST and all is well.

Thanks for setting me on the right path.
