Video playback problems with 10.3: not even vlc player works

I use a Compact Presario.
3ghz Intel Celeron Processor
Onboard ATI Radeon Xpress 1100 video
512mb ram

I've installed all of the codecs (I think), and I've even tried playing the video with and without the ATI driver installed, but I still get the same result; video playback that looks like painted vertical lines.

After a lot of tinkering I managed to get Kaffeine to play my xvid videos. I chose the xshm driver under the xine Engine options.

If you have any suggestions or solutions for this very frustrating problem, it would be greatly appreciated.
